A program of Bobbie’s Staff
Friday to Monday is the longest stretch.
School lunch stops on Friday afternoon and doesn’t start again until Monday morning. For some children in Mason Consolidated School District, that’s most of a weekend with very little to eat. Weekend meal bags close that gap.
How it works
Deliberately simple, and deliberately quiet.
A teacher flags a need
Staff know which children arrive hungry on a Monday. There is no application form, no paperwork and no means test — a teacher just tells us.
Volunteers pack the bags
Every child gets a bag of their own: shelf-stable breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks. Most of it a child can open unaided; a few items just want a minute in the microwave.
It goes home on Friday
The bag goes home with the child before the last bell. Nothing is announced and nobody is singled out in front of the class.
What a bag costs
A bag averages about $3 to pack, so a gift of any size goes a long way. Bags are packed from whatever is in the fund that week.
The rest of what we do
Blessing boxes
Two open pantries — at the Luna Pier branch library and Erie Township Hall — stocked around the clock with food, hygiene items, hats and gloves. See where they are.
Pantry, by appointment
A stocked pantry for the needs a blessing box cannot cover, open to families by appointment. Get in touch and we will set a time.
